Due to personal safety concerns we had to be extremely conscious of not exposing where we were.
Computer hacking. Taken from a previous website, combine this with attempts to lure me into unsafe locations, and you've got a story like no other, one that simply must be told
Previously (2010), I had made reference to changing from normal Windows PCs to Apple Macintosh, preferring the stability and more robust security that the Mac operating system is widely renowned for. Along with these assets, Macintosh computers are certainly more fitting for someone with a deep interest in photography.
Under normal circumstances, I feel it is fair to say that a Mac user has little use for such things as antivirus programs. With what was obviously a false of security, I never bothered to think anymore about any such cloak-and-dagger cyberattack activities.
In 2010, situated in Kathmandu, my internet connection was via DSL modem operated by Nepal Telecom. Late October, possibly early November, I noticed that the modem had started making a strange clicking noise. However, I didn't think too much about it, putting it down to the normal fluctuating voltage one experiences in this region.
300 miles apart, both Apple Mac computers hacked
At the same time, my wife, who was away visiting, called me one day to say that she was experiencing strange problems with the the iMac; I was using a MacBook Pro at the time. Immediately, alarm bells started to ring. Clicking of modem, screen going dim, aha! Yes, my website is now highly controversial; it is the very site where I had early forewarned my readers to look out for an accident in the Serengeti; given all the earlier incidents, as well as the revolver-assisted warning, we all know that a few that would prefer to see this site down once and for all.
At the same time as all this was taking place, I, along with my web assistant, witnessed folders being moved across my desktop without any input from ourselves; we couldn’t believe what we were seeing before our eyes.
Keep in mind that SBSs had had my videos showing balloon defects and windy takeoffs pulled down off YouTube, as they falsely claimed both mine and my wife’s copyright. Now republished with the warning that I have placed a cash value of no less than £75,000 on them, SBS has not contested my copyright, which is a smart move.
Back to Mac Hacking:-
I quickly read up on security measures, thereafter spending the rest of the night pressing buttons and altering various aspects of the Mac operating system. Once I was convinced that I've got matters under control, I passed instructions on to my wife so that she could do the same. Soon after, amazingly, her computer came back to life, with no more screens going dim; however, I had previously mentioned to my webmaster that I had seen my mouse cursor moving across my screen without any input from my side, and scrolling had taken place. Later, I explained all this to my wife, who is not as well up on computers as myself, “yes she said, “I had the same here”.
Looks suspiciously like Cyberspace crime if you ask me !!
Gmail account repeatedly compromised:
I had already been in regular communications with one of the bereaved, US lawyer Donna Marron.
Given that it was her 85-year-old father who was killed in the Serengeti, I felt that she must be treading on an emotional minefield yet remaining cool, calm and collected at the same time; I took my hat off to her.
Donna raised the question concerning the topic of communication security; this was owing to the fact that my Gmail account has now also started playing up.
For some time, whenever logging on, I have been receiving a warning indicating that I may be logging on to a bogus Gmail server, something to do with the mismatch of servers in the wrong location. Countermeasures were immediately brought into play; however, they can’t be written about at this time. Subsequent to those activities, the details of such security measures were passed on to the North Yorkshire police force in 2010.
Later, subsequent to Tony Pascoe’s malicious complaint, this matter would be raised again, with the Avon and Somerset police in September 2012. I find it suspicious that over the years since my departure from SBS, my email accounts have been compromised on a regular basis.
Donna had also gone public with her own website, it was also hacked and crashed.
